Geometry

CAD or Computer Aided Design - is nearly 40 years old and now goes by many other names.

Some of the most powerful applications of 3D modelling use algorithms to drive the geometry in contemporary Architectural design.

Nature uses algorithms too.*

What ever software's you use - find out if they are using any ML ( Machine Learning ) or AI - that can be used to help you with your design output.

AI in Architecture during the design stage.

There are stunningly beautiful new structures being created - this one by Ma Yansong. Click on the image for a short video.

Computational Design Groups.

Enjoy this 10 minute youtube on Zaha Hadid Architecture. Take note of their in house CODE group around about the the use of algorithms to generate and study form.

"We need to have the capacity to scan the scientific literature and then build the algorithms and tools which you then distribute to the office."

"Programatic Invention is the most exciting" - Zaha Hadid.

Generative Design.

Many modelling packages today can generate permutations of forms that the architect can select from. The designs often selected are beyond human ability to draft or model up into existence in the usual time frames.

AI generates new Geometry FAST.

Samples take from the Zaha Hadid video - these are hard for humans to draw model up.

We certainly can't do it at the speeds that AI enhanced software's can.

The AI is often leading the Architect down new paths.

Using the AI software to generate new forms is a new creative influence - the AI is generating ideas from buildings to city planning.

AI in Architecture and DIGITAL TWINS.

AI is also used in the development and construction process and then again during the life time of the building.

This image shows the complete life cycle of a building including recycling.

This is managed using a Digital Twin of the building called BIM - Building Information Modelling.

This large and complicated approach can only be achieved with ML and AI assisted geometry creation.

Watch this 30 minute video from the Graphisoft site - you'll need to scoll into the corp site a little - but is is a great explainer video.

BIM is useful in the day to day opperations of the building - AFTER it has been opened and the occupants have moved in.

Amongst many other things, sensors can be used to monitor the building and make sure it is optimised towards energy and water conservation, human traffic, air quality and generally make buildings are more human and environmentally friendly.

Generative modelling in Industrial Design & beautiful engineering.

AutoCAD's Fusion 360 is a popular choice of Industrial Designers and Engineers interested in exploring Generative Design or as it is sometime known Topology Optimization.

Topology is a mathematical term and means a bit more than surfaces.

noun

  1. the study of geometrical properties and spatial relations unaffected by the continuous change of shape or size of figures.
  2. the way in which constituent parts are interrelated or arranged.
  3. "the topology of a computer network" - less applicable here.

For quite a complex mechanical part, his simple 3 step process shows how the geometry has been optimized by the software.

This is much faster than a human can draw and / or model.

And if given the desired materials and mechanical characteristics, the machine defined part will be better made.

Engineering CAD packages have been pushing Generative design for a number of years now to create even better solutions than were previously capable.

This development has gone hand in hand with 3D printing which allow the production of forms that cannot be achieved by other means - some of the results are breathtakingly exciting.
