Pixels, Voxels, Vixels

Pixels

A minute area of illumination on a display screen, one of many from which an image is composed.

Born out the RGB ( Red Green Blue ) color photography system in 1861 by James Clerke Maxwell.

RGB was first used to separate the Red, Green and Blue light in order to photograph a wee tartan ribbon.

The three seperated lights were then recombined to reassemble a full color image and RGB was born.

Here's a great historical time line 4 minute video.

Voxels.

The word voxel originated analogously to the word "pixel", with vo representing "volume" and el representing "element"

Think Minecraft :-)

Tho it is NOT always a cube, it is a 3D element of a 3D file, just as a pixel is a 2D element of a 2D image.

This is an image of 3D Voxels.

A fuller explanation is given in the intel video.

Vixels

actually a VCSEL - Vertical Cavity Surface Emitting Laser - pronounced Vixel - technology used in the teensy little projectors used to make Google Glass and other wearable Heads up displays.

In this case it is describing the technology NOT the image element, but the lasers produce VERY small images on their projecting surface.
